After reading What Vets Don't Tell You About Vaccines by Catherine O'Driscoll I feared my Danes would keel over dead if I ever vaccinated them again.  Then I found Vaccine Guide For Dogs And Cats: What Every Pet Owner Should Know -by Catherine Diodati.  This book is the one I wish I had read first.  In truth vaccines are very beneficial, we all got them as children and give them to both our two and four legged kids.  Overuse by unscrupulous veterinarians, more interested in their bottom line that your pets well-being have caused the current scare over vaccines. 

My veterinarian, following guidelines prescribed by the AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) Canine Vaccine Task Force recommends the following vaccine protocol.

• At six, nine and twelve weeks of age give Intervets multi * DA2PP+CCV (Distemper, Adenovirus Type 2, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus, Coronavirus).
• At fourteen weeks, an intranasal (never an injectable) vaccination with live avirulent bacteria Bordatella vaccine.  Thereafter, it is only recommended for dogs expected to board, be shown, or to enter a kennel situation within 6 months time.  Most boarding kennels require that this vaccine be given within 6 months of boarding; the vaccine should be administered at least one week prior to the anticipated boarding date for maximum effect.
• At sixteen weeks, give a three year rabies.
• At one year, give a Canine Parvovirus, Distemper Virus, and Adenovirus-2 Vaccine booster.  Dogs should be given additional boosters at three and six years of age (not yearly) but never at the same time as receiving their Rabies or Bordetella.
• Remember, all vaccinations say they are only to be given to healthy dogs.  If your dog is ill or has any health related issues you should not vaccinate! All vaccinations (especially rabies) on Dane's aged nine plus years should be based on the overall health of the dog. 

* I used to vaccinate puppies myself and much more frequently; however, my veterinarian told me that Intervets insures their vaccine if administered by a veterinarian.  If any animal gets any of the diseases for which they have been vaccinated, then Intervets will pay up to 350.00 for medical treatments and will pay 500.00 in the event a puppy dies.  To me, this means they are confident enough in the product they produce to guarantee them financially.
